Why is protein important?

When people think about protein, they imagine a swole gym rat saying “let’s get yoked!”. Protein is often associated with people wanting to get big, and bulky, but protein is much more than that. Protein is a building block of bone, muscle, cartilage, skin, and blood. It is in every single cell of your body. A protein is made up of smaller units called amino acids. Your body needs a complete protein that has all 9 essential amino acids. Since those amino acids cannot be made by the body, we turn to food. What do you know…those 9 essential amino acids can be found in whey protein!

How do I carve abs like Superwoman?

Yes and no. Protein doesn’t build more muscle on its own, but it helps. You need to incorporate exercise to be able to do that. Protein aids in recovery after workouts by repairing muscle fibers, and replenishing deleted energy stores. If you want to look like a superhero, eat protein equivalent to your activity level so that your body will function while providing enough amino acid recovery for you to do those 300 squats, and 400 lb. bench presses.

Is there such thing as too much protein?

Yes, in excessive amounts. Eating more protein than needed will not make your muscles recover quicker, or make them get bigger. An excess of protein will throw your body off balance. It cannot store extra protein, so it breaks it down and uses it for energy. However, the majority of the active population is deficient in the amino acids specifically needed to build and repair muscle.
